Lime in Soil Stabilization

Lime, specifically quicklime and hydrated lime, is used widely in construction to chemically modify and stabilize delicately grained soils and for drying moist soils. Lime is versatile and can be used all year round for effective soil stabilization and drying. These qualities of lime improve the load-bearing capacity, optimise moisture content, and enhance pavement durability, avoiding costly project details.

Soil Modification

This is a type of soil improvement where lime is used to modify fine-grained soils by exchanging calcium cations. This practice reduces plasticity, swelling, and moisture-holding capacity, leading to improved stability. Sodium and Potassium ions on the clay particles are replaced by calcium ions when lime is added to the soil. Lime helps to flocculate and agglomerate the clay particles, making the soil stable and easier to work with.

Soil Stabilization

Under this type of improvement, the soil is provided with a significant long-term strength increase. This equips the soil with a resistance to emotional factors such as moisture and temperature changes. This ensures long-lasting furniture with sustained strength gains and enhanced durability. As a result of the addition of a proper amount of lime into the reactive soil, cementitious products are formed, succeeding the reaction of lime aluminates and silicates in the soil.
